Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani is the former Emir of Qatar, having ruled from 1995 until his abdication in 2013 in favor of his son, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. He is known for his role in modernizing Qatar and significantly increasing its wealth through natural gas and oil exports.
